The Systems Specialist possesses and applies a broad knowledge of information technology to provide technical support to Research Department end users through education, training, consulting, and technical assistance regarding the use of software and hardware. Utilizes expertise and performs analysis to determine required hardware and software in conjunction with end user needs and department strategy. Installs new and/or expands existing PCs and software applications. Assists in the product evaluations of end user computing packages and equipment as well as the implementation and testing of prototypes. Independently consults with research staff regarding PC and equipment problems or malfunctions and implements solutions. May interact with network services, software systems engineering, and/or application development to restore systems or identify and correct problems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops and enhances knowledge of information technology related to PC platform, network development, systems, information security, and hardware and software advancements.

  • Strategically explores and makes recommendations on new technologies for use in Research. Completes product and technology evaluations as well as testing and pilot activities to provide sound recommendations to meet business needs.

  • Responds to Research user requests and coordinates problem resolution with assistance from technical support.

  • Assists in maintenance of Research Area Network (RAN). Acts as backup for trouble shooting problems with the RAN. Works to develop an in-depth understanding of network and system issues.

  • Provides information and guidance to users of PCs and peripherals concerning PC applications and selection and use of hardware and software for end user computing.

  • Provides advanced technical assistance and training on use of computers and other technical devices, such as printers, handheld devices, and networking equipment.

  • Troubleshoots moderate to high complexity hardware and software issues.

  • Installs, upgrades, supports, and maintains global, group-specific, and stand-alone application packages within a Windows operating environment.

  • Configures and distributes new hardware and performs software licensing, installations, and upgrades to meet System and department schedules.

  • Responsible for the inventory of research computing equipment and software.
