Reporting to the Vice President of R&D, Surgical Specialties this position will be responsible for managing all new product development activity for the Lung Health R&D organization. As a key strategic and technical leadership role, primary responsibilities will be to ensure business growth, primarily through new products, while driving collaboration with peer leaders across R&D, Marketing, Product Development, Operations, Medical Affairs and Regulatory functions as well as all key regions. Work will include managing all POI activity and identifying & exploring new product development opportunities that drive sustainable growth in existing and adjacent market spaces within Lung Health. The Sr. Director of R&D, will lead R&D centers in multiple geographies focused on lung health and have responsibility for managing the R&D Budget. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Provides leadership for all innovation & research activities associated with the Lung Health business within Surgical Innovations including holistic disease management solutions across sites.
Drives execution and accountability for all Lung Health related activity at multiple R&D centers and interconnected development programs to deliver appropriate scope on time and on budget.
Build highly motivated and aligned teams that can execute effectively. Manage teams and leaders across geographic, functional and cultural boundaries. Optimize communication, collaboration and trust across several sites and functions.
Manages and chairs the Lung Health Product Decision Team (PDT), providing expert guidance, prioritization, technical & process insight for core teams to overcome challenges and meet business expectations for product development & resource allocation.
Actively participate on the Lung Health leadership staff to develop strategy, tactics and execution of strategic plan initiatives and programs.
Collaborate with peer leaders in strategy, functional excellence and execution of broad research, technology development and product development efforts.
Partner internally and externally with global stakeholders to ensure the development of the best meaningful innovations of medical device technology to meet unmet medical needs in alignment with the Medtronic Mission.
Responsible for the overall vision and strategy for Innovation within the Lung Health.
Participates on the Lung Health Leadership staff to develop strategy, tactics and execution of strategic plan initiatives and programs and collaborates with peer leaders across divisions in strategy, functional excellence and execution of broad Surgical Innovations research, technology and development efforts.
Leads the Lung Health research and development organization and attracts, develops and retains the best talent to ensure the highest standard of excellence in industry research and development resulting in accelerated delivery of meaningful innovations to patients globally.
Develops and maintains an effective external network with key opinion leaders, regional innovation stakeholders, relevant clinical associations and institutions in order to identify future technological trends and developments and being recognized as an influential leader at those external bodies.
Effectively manage significant budget, including different funding sources - driving opportunities for strategic growth and innovation.
Provide updates and investment opportunities to the Specialty Product Management Teams (PMT's)
Actively engage in the Surgical Innovations Technology Review Board (TRB)
BS in scientific or engineering degree. Preferred MS, PhD and/or MBA. Demonstrated leadership skills, excellent oral and written communications skills, strategic planning, influence management and problem solving skills, critical thinking and decision-making skills, and commitment to the Medtronic Mission.
15+ years' experience in healthcare industry, with demonstrated success in organizational development, leadership, and budgetary responsibility in research, technology development, product development, clinical leadership roles or senior business roles.
Ability to lead large diverse groups and organizations
Strong project management and organizational leadership skills
Dynamic communication and people management skills with an ability to lead managers and leaders across the organization.

May participate in a cross GBU programs, and manage external contract work. Frequent contact with customers and external service organizations.
Work usually performed in an office setting.
Significant time engaging customers in OR theatre and hospital or lab settings.
- Up to 35% domestic and or international travel may be required.
