Our client is looking for a Senior FPGA design engineer. Responsible for the development of new and modification of legacy VHDL based FPGA designs Work with electrical engineer team on FPGA based design concepts and architectures. Implement FPGA designs in VHDL, support hardware and firmware integration.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities: 

  • Develop VHDL based FPGA designs for Xilinx FPGAs.
  • Manage FPGA synthesis/place/route and timing/utilization optimization.
  • Perform functional FPGA simulations and static timing analysis.
  • Work with hardware and uC firmware design engineers to develop FPGA based board and system level architectures.
  • Support board level and system level test and integration of FPGA based designs.


  • In depth understanding and experience in developing complex FPGA designs.
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university. 
  • M.S. degree a plus but not required.
  • Minimum of ten years developing VHDL based FPGA designs as primary job function.

Design Experience:

  • Extensive experience with Xilinx FPGA design including detailed knowledge of cell architectures, design optimization, clock distribution, performance tradeoffs, etc.
  • Extensive experience with Mentor Graphics ModelSim simulation tool in validating functionality, clock rates and timing margins.
  • Extensive experience with Synopsys Synplify and FPGA synthesis from VHDL.
  • Experience developing FPGA based SPI hardware interfaces to A/D, D/A, uC, DSP and EEPROM ICs.
  • Experience developing FPGA based PID control algorithms.
  • Experience developing FPGA based arithmetic functions using the IEEE754 floating point format.
  • Integration and test experience.
  • Experience debugging FPGA based designs at the SW and HW integration level.

Skills/Technical Requirements:

  • Strong control system theory.
  • Thermal control experience desired.
  • Ability to work cross functionally with Mechanical, Software and Firmware engineers.
  • Ability to write Engineering design specifications and test procedures
  • Strong analysis and problem solving skills. 
  • Knowledge of good engineering practices and the ability to follow existing guidelines and processes.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. 

Job Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Presence in Poway facility to support integration and test desired.
  • Walking, bending, prolonged sitting at a computer terminal. 
  • Minimal exertion.
